Dinner at Some Kind Of Wonderful (SKOW)

R came home last Tuesday for their promotion thingamajigs. Yup, my young dashing lieutenant will soon be a mighty captain, by God's grace. I know he can pass their physical fitness test required for getting promoted. Only, with lots of sweat! Hehe. See, he's not the sporty type. And getting fit is such a big deal already. He lost a lot of weight since I last saw him. He told me he's on a strict diet - a diet he made for himself: no breakfast, heavy lunch, no merienda and light dinner. Well, he knows his body well so I guess it's working for him. He avoids pork and greasy dishes, too. It's sort of a tough task for me as I love meat and anything fried. Last Thursday night, I was not feeling that great and LB has colds. He decided to dine out. We both agreed to look for somewhere within Marikina. We already tried Cafe Lidia for my birthday dinner last year; so we chose the next resto I know - Some Kind Of Wonderful or better known as SKOW.

My soldier sure knows how to read maps and can actually spend more than a month in the mountain; but we surprisingly got lost looking for this place. Like what he said, "wala naman kasing sinasabing one-way sa mapa". Haha! That is, Google Maps. For me, we had a hard time looking for SKOW because 1) madilim na 2) one-way ang daan papunta dun so we have to make ikot pa, nakakalito swear 3) wala ng MAPA --- mapagtatanungan. I guess it has been a lot easier if we commuted. 'Cause according to our fellow netizens: sakay jeep to SSS Village then ask manong driver na ibaba ka near St. Paul Parish Church, which is katapat lang ng SKOW. But if you're on a private vehicle like us, make sure na if you'll be looking for it eh hindi kayo ganun kagutom.

I don't know for some who already got to experience the place, but dun pa lang we didn't like to rave about it na. Unlike Cafe Lidia and Vizco's, both were along the road na easy to access for everyone. Geographically-idiot man (like me!) or not, mahahanap. But like the other restos I've mentioned, SKOW doesn't have a parking space. Dun lang sa kalsada. Buti na lang that time, wala pa masyado customers kaya dun mismo sa tapat kami nakapag-park.

When we entered it, I'm impressed at how it was designed. 80s. I'm not so familiar with some most of the posters on the wall. I was born on that decade so I'm more of late 80s to 90s kid. But yeah, I listened to Beatles which was famous during 60s. Whatever. Anyway, my LB, being so likot and curious as a cat went to the shelves and naki-usi din. Umupo na kami to order food na and we were greeted by a girl with so kapal ng kilay. Marami atang pambili ng eyebrow pencil si ate. That was okay, actually. What I kinda didn't like was they were not in uniform. Sana man lang same polo shirt or tee. The impression was like it was just a high-end karinderya. Holding the very payak na menu card, I realized maybe because of the prices of their food.

The first thing we ordered was the Nacho Chips: Php100 and it was in a real big serving. Pwede na sa apat na magbabarkada na gusto lang tumambay at makinood ng Juan dela Cruz sa TCL TV nila.

R ordered Kakiage Tempura. I know you know what it is. But for us na jologs, it's just okoy. And we really looked for that simple vinegar with bawang as its sawsawan. Unfortunately, it was partnered with something like a soy sauce na nagmamantika. We didn't like it. Good thing there were left-overs and we ate it at home with the suka that we like. The soldier-on-diet didn't order rice, light lang daw. Pero fried naman inorder. Echusero.

I ordered lemon buttered prawns with rice! Nothing special with the taste, may flair lang yung pagka-plate. But a regular wife who knows her way in the kitchen can cook it. Therefore, I can do it. At walang bland na pagkain sa taong gutom. Pak.

Rhambo also ordered Fish and Chips, na dapat ang tawag ay Fish and Fries. Look at that tiny cute hand at the photo. That's my girl's! She was hungry but turned out na nawalan ata ng gana. She didn't eat anything we ordered. :(

Generally, the experience was okay but forgettable. R said the food was fine, hindi mo nga lang daw para i-suggest sa iba and balikan pa. And I second the motion. Nothing special about how the food was cooked or the menu itself. But super nabusog naman ako. The most important thing is, we dined out as a family. See that smile of my princess? Hindi yan nabusog pero super happy siya. That is what's wonderful!

  8. The food looks good! I always love to eat those food but mostly in US, those are types of food you can find here. I miss the traditional food. But glad to have SKOW there in PI for Filipinos to experience US type of food as well.

  16. Sorry to hear your bad experience in SKOW. We discovered SKOW through Yummy Magazine and Stache Mag with its good reviews we decided to try it, we came home very satisfied naman. Baka mali lang naorder niyo, I suggest try their pasta, their salmon steak and their old style cheeseburger, and also try their katsudon and tonkatsu believe me its better than Tamagoya and Crazy Katsu. I heard SKOW's japanese cook came from Yabu. I was also a regular of Lidia before food was nothing great paulit ulit lang, I find them overrated. Ganun talaga To each its own, mayron nasasarapan meron wala. If anybody here who haven't tried SKOW or any other resto, try it first before you judge them, don't listen to other's opinion, what may be bad to them may be good to you. Kanya kanyang taste buds lang yan? I can't compare SKOW to Lidia or Qizia iba level nila eh, but for a hole in the wall resto I can honestly say SKOW is one of the best in Marikina. At par with restos in Kapitolyo and Maginhawa and Dian. Just my 2 cents.

    1. Sweetie, that's why there's this thing called review. :)
You will read those that you believe may be the same way that you think. And if you "heard" the cook's from Yabu, I don't want to believe that yet. I need proof. Because from what I have tasted, it's nothing but ordinary. Btw, it's not a hole in the wall resto, it used to be a house. Thanks for your comment! :)

    2. That's why I said to each its own, what may be bad to you may be good to me. That's why I was objective enough to say that if people who haven't tried the place yet should try it before they judge them. You cannot rate a place because you were not impressed with a meal or two. There is such a thing called bestsellers or specialties. Not all menus are perfect and as am saying if you found the meals
you ordered were ordinary to others it may not be that way. Reviews are just guides. they are not meant to sway other readers to believe what the blogger's opinion, especially if the author is just new in the business. If I were to think the way you think, then I would rather be swayed by Anton Diaz and Miss Roni Flores who are already legends in the food blogging scene in their own right. Why would I listen to you? as you said give us proof! You give me proof that you have a royal taste bud who can say what is good food and what is not. Learn from the experts like Mr. Diaz and Miss Flores, read their blogs first and you will see what they always quote, that they are not food experts but food lovers and they blog for the love of food hindi para mag rate. If you were so impressed with Lidia sorry we're not, That is your opinion and I have mine. One piece of advice make a name first and kung may repu ka na then tsaka ka magreview Ang hirap kase sa tao ngaun nagkaroon lsng ng camera at laptop self proclaimed foodie na. Buhay nga naman! BTW hole in the wall means a small and very modest place often out of the way place. Kaya being a former house doesn't mean anything. BTW I read it in Stache Mag it was a former hardware not a house. So to make things clear I would rather listen to Yummy Mag and Stache Mag and Roni Flores good reviews than to listen to someone who haven't proven something yet. Tignan mo nga quality ng review mo sa iba ang layo, pati kilay ng mga staff ng place pinapansin mo. Sweetie learn from the experts first.

    3. Hello again, Andrea! You're back! ;)

Can you quote me in this post that I said I'm an expert or at least a foodie? I did this review for my fellow Marikenyos who might want to visit the place. So they know what to expect. We really didn't think the food was awesome. So no point of lying and using flowery words just to sound nice.
But again, thanks for coming back! :p

    4. Hi again did you see my first post that's why I said to each its own may nasasarapan meron din hindi. My 1st post was very objective. That's why I Said to the people who haven't tried try it first before you judge. Kaya nagulat ako sa 1st reply mo, medyo sarcastic. I know this is your blog and you can okray who you want to okray, I was just being honest na we had a different experiece with skow,
eh yun ang totoo nasarapan kame eh. That's why I eagerly posted a comment kase nakalagay sa blog mo comments are most welcome. I never questioned you if you weren't impressed with them. That's why nagpost ako na masarap sa skow para to other people that will read the blog to keep an open mind. If you don't want to be contradicted in your own blog then don't encourage commenots. I'm just being honest too nasarapan ako sa skow that is my opinion and you have yours. Thanks for your reply. God bless. Peace

  17. LOL Andrea :P it's her blog, not yours..she's entitled to write whatever she wants :P miss denise blogged about her experience and the food she tasted..eh kung gusto mo i defend yung place, make your own blog post about it

Do you mean na dapat yung bestseller ang bilhin before puede i rate ang isang place? O_o hindi naman cguro..eh kung ganun, hindi na lng nila dapat i sell yung mga "ordinary food", yung na lang specialty kasi po yung mga tao hindi naman lagi yung specialty or bestseller ang ino-order..most actually go for the familiar-looking/sounding food..
